B&B Stadslogement Oudewater, Netherlands | Sometimes photos don’t lie. Elegant properties like this one are hard to find and well booked in advance. The Asian invaders Achi, Achurp, Ajean and Aong did check in at B&B Stadslogement Oudewater in April 2018. Our goal was having an accommodation in striking distance to Amsterdam (50 minutes) and Utrecht (20 minutes) at a reasonable price: € 1,246 for 7 nights. That was 178 per night, 45 per person per night = Jackpot! We enjoyed a cosy stylish house with two bedrooms upstairs, each including an own bathroom, a kitchen and living room on the ground level, a quiet neighborhood, awesome breakfast, all rooms very tastefully furnished … B&B Stadslogement did tick all the buttons! Simply outstanding and without a doubt one of the best B&Bs we have ever been to. It reminded as a bit of our memorable stay in Agriturismo Terra Rossa in Pistoia, Italy last year – not so much in style but in the overall feel-good atmosphere. We think ‘PERFECT’ is the word that needs to be used here. Try to get that in Amsterdam … no chance.
The city center of Oudewater is just 5 minutes away from B&B Stadslogement. Oudewater is a small old sleepy city with a few restaurants – one is even Chinese, some channels and a bunch of historic buildings. It doesn’t make headlines nowadays. But it used to in the past. Long time ago Oudewater was famous for a so-called ‘Heksenwaag’. That’s a scale for measuring the physical weight of a person accused of being a witch. For that matter a weighing house was built in the 16th century. People accused of witchcraft were offered a chance of proving their innocence. Many people accused of witchcraft from all over Europe rushed towards Oudewater to avoid being burned. After such weighing, they received an official certificate proclaiming them not a witch. Even today you can get a certificate that “your body weight is in proportion to your build.” The reasoning behind all this fuzz: in the middle ages it was believes that a witch has no soul and therefore weighs significantly less than an ordinary human being. This distinction allows a witch to fly on a broomstick. Crazy, but what to do. People tend to believe all kinds of nonsense.
But what about Amsterdam and Utrecht? Both cities are true gems. Add them to your bucket list!
