Best Hiking Shoes 2018 | Here is our wish list. Hiking boots should be not too bulky but rather lightweight, reasonably waterproof, tough, supportive, comfortable and over-the-ankle style. If you ever spread your ankles, you know why this is important. The contenders: Salomon, Merrell and Adidas. Some of the boots listed here are more pricy, some are cheaper. In this case price didn’t really matter much to us. For shoes we recommend not to be too stingy. Shoes are crucial contributors to your well-being when on vacation. Hiking boots help you arrive at the next camp site with happy feet. Don’t mess this up by saving money the wrong way.
Salomon Quest 4D
This was our favorite. It might not be yours. The latest updated version of the Salomon’s Quest series is model 3, called Salomon Quest 4D 3. There are versions for men and women available. But the differences between the two seem to be around about zero. We only noticed a slight difference in weight. As a woman trying to decide between the men’s size 8 or the women’s size 9, we suggest: just go by the color you like the most. For us the Salomon Quest 4D 3 did it. It turned out to be a smart choice for our demanding climbs and descents. It might not become your friend if you just want to move fast and light on well-maintained trails. For such kind of activity this shoe is a bit stiff and overkill. Also negative: the shoes are not really made for cold winter days, and the men’s version does weight 640g, while the women’s version only weights 560g. adidas Terrex Swift
Another serious option to consider: the Adidas Sport Performance Mens Terrex Swift R Mid GTX Hiking Boots (yes, this is the complete name of the shoe. You will have to take a second breath at some point to speak it out fully. These hiking boots won’t cost you an arm and a leg. We found them as cheap as US$124+ at Amazon. But make sure you choose an over-the-ankle version! Adidas Terrex Swift R GTX, US$124+ at Amazon.
Merrell Moab 2
Merrell’s Moab 2: affordable, and scoring high. These boots are significantly cheaper than both adidas Terrex and Salomon Quest. Still you will purchase a top-quality product. Merrell Men’s Moab 2 Vent Mid Hiking Boots are listed at Amazon from US$90 upwards. They will definitely do the job. The shoes are made from suede leather and mesh, with a vibram sole. Only bummer: more mesh means less water resistance. But they are long lasting. Merrell Men’s Moab 2, US$90+ at Amazon.
Differences between Men’s and Women’s Hiking Boots
Although the Salomon Quest 4D is not going for it, there can be noticeable differences between the men’s and women’s version of a hiking shoe. Most important difference: the “last” = the form that shoemakers use to create the fit and style of a boot. Most hiking boots are made on men’s lasts. Now some companies are using women specific lasts.
List of general differences between men’s hiking shoes and women’s hiking shoes:
– Last.
– Weight. Men’s hiking shoes usually weigh a little more.
– Higher ankle support for men’s hiking shoes.
– Colors. Shoemakers tend to add more colors to women’s hiking shoes.
