The Rock of Guatape (La Piedra Del Penol) | Looking for a nice underrated tourist destination? Try Guatape in Colombia. It’s a remote place up in the mountains, close to georgeous lakes and near to a fancy looking stone: the Rock of Guatape – South Americas famous monolith. Composed of quartz, feldspar and mica this stone can be conquered via 700 stairs. On top of this Colombian National Monument you will not just have an amazing view across the Guatape Lagoon. A viewing spot was built up high on top of the rock, where it is possible to acquire souvenirs and local goods. So climbing up this stone is definitely worth it. Interesting side note: The Rock of Guatape was first climbed in 1954 – not so long ago actually; one year AFTER the first ascent of Mount Everest!
